Defining a consistent strategy to model ground- motion parameters for the GEM-PEER Global GMPEs Project

چکیده

The project entitled Global Ground Motion Prediction Equations is funded by the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation and has the objective of recommending a harmonized suite of ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs) that can be used at the global and regional scales for seismic hazard analysis and loss estimation studies. As part of this project, Task 1a experts were commissioned to make recommendations on the critical aspects of seismological predictor parameters that are used by predictive model developers to estimate ground motions for different earthquake scenarios. It is hoped that these recommendations would lead to the optimum description of groundmotion models that can be used efficiently for reliable seismic hazard assessment studies.

A hybrid computational approach to derive new ground-motion prediction equations

A novel hybrid method coupling genetic programming and orthogonal least squares, called GP/OLS, was employed to derive new ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs). The principal ground-motion parameters formulated were peak ground acceleration (PGA), peak ground velocity (PGV) and peak ground displacement (PGD). The proposed GMPEs relate PGA, PGV and PGD to different seismic parameters inclu...

Selecting ground - motion models developed for induced seismicity in geothermal areas

2 Summary 20 We present a case study of the ranking and weighting of ground-motion prediction equations (GMPE) 21 for seismic hazard assessment of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGSs). The study region is Cooper 22 Basin (Australia), where a hot-fractured-rock project was established in 2002. We test the applicability 23 of 36 GMPEs based on stochastic simulations previously proposed for use at E...

Preface of special issue on: A new generation of ground-motion models for Europe and the Middle East

The past decade has seen great advances in the understanding of how strong ground motions scale with various independent (source, path and site) parameters and increased sophistication in the modelling of these effects in ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs). In parallel there has been considerable progress made in modelling and quantifying the various components of aleatory variability (...

Ground-Motion Prediction Equations for Eastern North America from a Referenced Empirical Approach: Implications for Epistemic Uncertainty

I outline a referenced empirical approach to the development of groundmotion prediction equations (GMPEs). The technique is illustrated by using it to develop GMPEs for eastern North America (ENA). The approach combines the ENA ground-motion database with the empirical prediction equations of Boore and Atkinson (2008) for the reference region of western North America (WNA). The referenced empir...

Estimation of Linear Site Amplification by a Ground Motion Prediction Equation Using Results from a Site Survey

One of the ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs), which have recently been developed in the Next Generation Attenuation (NGA) project, is employed in this article to estimate site response in terms of amplification factor of the seismic waves in soft superficial sedimentary layer. This study also presents briefly the existing information dealing with the methods for estimating subsurface s...
